THE RISE OF LIFESTYLE DISEASES AND HOW GENERIC MEDICINES CAN HELP.

THE RISE OF LIFESTYLE DISEASES AND HOW GENERIC MEDICINES CAN HELP

Thanks to the recent economic growth in India and its accompanying service sector jobs, we can see all around us how lifestyle diseases like heart disease, diabetes and obesity can wreck our lives.  Lifestyle modifications like daily physical activities, proper diet and regular sleeping can help us in these regards but the real life-savers are the doctor visits and the medicines.  Depending on the medical condition, medicines need to be used on a daily basis or on a temporary basis until the conditions improves but the cost of these medicines can be a huge burden for middle class/lower class families, as branded medicines cost significantly higher.

Blood Pressure

Here  branded generic medicines can be of huge help.  A major blood pressure-reducing medicine called ramipril (sold under brand name Acepril in India) can cost around 56-58 rupees, but the same medicine of similar strength generic ramipril costs only around 9-13 rupees in branded generic medicalshop.  If doctor advises you to take this medicine on a regular basis, taking generic medicine can be of huge help as the cost is very low compared to the brand name and it has similar strength and composition.  The reason majority of us gravitate towards brand-name medications is because of the persisting myth that brand-name medicines work faster and have a greater effect on the disease, which is not true.

Diabetes

Another major lifestyle disease is the diabetes.  This dreaded disease is on the verge of being declared an epidemic in India thanks to our craving for energy-dense foods and sedentary lifestyle.  It is our perception that only the upper middle class people in urban areas are suffering from diabetes, but in reality diabetes is fast rising as a major disease in rural areas as well thanks to increased mechanization and loss of frugal eating habits.  According to IDF (International DiabetesFederation), the current treatment cost for diabetes is Rs. 6000 per annual per person as of 2015.  It becomes difficult for an average Indian to maintain treatment costs throughout the year buying anti-diabetic drugs, insulin etc.  For example, if you buy branded anti-diabetic drug called Glimepride + metformin from India's major pharma companies, it comes around Rs. 52 to 62.  The same combination drug with similar strengths available in generic form will cost you around Rs. 17.51.

Obesity, more specifically morbid obesity (BMI of ≥ 35 kg/m2 and experiencing obesity-related health conditions), affects 5% of Indian population.  Due to recent economic growth and integration of various technologies, India is slowly leaving behind its agrarian roots and is developing into IT hub and service sector giant.  Unfortunately, India is also fast catching up with the developed nations with a trend towards obesity.  With obesity comes various ailments such as metabolic syndrome, congestive heart failure etc.  One the major medications used to treat congestive heart failure is carvedilol which is available in many branded forms, one of these is Cardivas which costs around Rs. 31 per strip of 10 tablets.  If you opt for an equivalent generic medicine of carvedilol it costs around 5.50 per strip of 10 tablets.

It is obvious that awareness is very important in this debate of brand-name vs generic.  Generic medicines are safe, effective and are rigorously tested before they are introduced into the market.  So it is important to talk to your doctor and ask him for an alternative generic medicine for the prescription that he provides.  With the number of generic medicine shops increasing day-by-day and online resources like genericwala common man now for the first time has the ease of access of generic medicines.

Health and Wellbeing - Digestive health from genericwala.com.

Health and wellbeing - Digestive health.

It is amazing how our digestive process takes whatever we eat and converts them to nutrients and water.  Sometimes our digestive health takes a backseat but as we all know from experience our digestive system is very sensitive to even minor maladies; the bloated feeling, the burning feeling and the wave of nausea and vomiting we feel after eating a strange-tasting food is all due to our digestive system dealing with the shock.  The ecosystem of our gut is very delicate with gut of a healthy person containing a good balance of various species of bacteria and a correct pH (acid and base) balance.  It is therefore paramount that we should carefully watch what we eat.

Here are some foods which help not only our digestive system but our overall health of the body.

Improving the ratio of good bacteria versus bad bacteria.

There are millions of bacteria residing in your gut at any given time, therefore it is very important to have a balance of good bacteria.  So the foods which are fermented such as curd (yogurt), fruits such as banana, roots such as garlic, onion play a vital role in maintaining the count of good bacteria.  Fiber supplements in the form of tablets and capsules can also be used, although you will get maximum benefits from consuming the above named food items.

Fiber – essential in maintaining good bowel health.

Dietary fiber is very important in that it helps how our gut absorbs nutrients, giving bulk to the stools and providing a smooth passage of digested material through our intestines.  We can get fiber in form of cooked dry beans (legumes, half a cup contains 8 g of fiber), whole grains, green leafy vegetables, orange vegetables and fruits.

Losing weight – foods which directly or indirectly help you losing weight.

It is now a proven fact that food items from Mediterranean diet like olive oil, whole grains (such as brown rice), low-fat cheese, fish, yogurt and red wine (in moderation) are very useful in promoting weight loss.  The added benefit is that your tummy will feel much better by losing that extra kilos and improves the overall well-being by reducing the feeling of acid burn, full or bloated feeling.  Making a habit of using olive oil in our daily diet is the right way to go since it has been proven that olive oil directly targets the fat cells and prevents fat accumulation.

Carminatives – foods that help the digestive process and relieve the gas problems.

Have you ever wondered why we use that particular spice in that recipe?  What makes the spice so special in that dish?  The answer is that essential spices like ginger, basil, cardamom, cinnamon, saffron, cumin all help in preventing formation of gas in the gastric tract.  In fact ginger is now fast gaining ground as the go-to supplement to treat motion sickness.  All the above spices have a calming and relaxing effect in our intestines so that is why the older generations in their wisdom have incorporated these spices in dishes which are prone to cause heartburn or bloated feeling.

Generic medicines – the lifesaver of masses.

Generic medicines – the lifesaver of masses.

What is a generic medicine?

A medical product that is identical to a brand name medical product in dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics.

According to guidelines of FDA (Food and Drug Administration), generic medical products are chemically equivalent to a brand name drug, although minor differences such as colour or types of salts or esters are present.

Why use generic medicine?

The main difference between a brand drug and its generic equivalent is the cost of the product.  A generic drug must contain the same ingredients and must be equivalent in strength and dosage to the orginal brand-name product.  The reason generic medicines are so cheap is because the manufacturers of generic drugs do not have the same development cost of a brand name and they pass on that benefit to customers.

Generic Medicines Vs Branded Medicines

Because of its low cost, generic medicines is the only type of medicines that the poor can afford.  Although access to generic medicines is yet to improve in India, times are now changing with some excellent online medical store startups that aim to provide medicines at a low cost.

Generic medicines come under the same umbrella of regulations as brand name medicines and they are absolutely safe to take.  There is a popular misconception that generic medicines take longer to work and has side effects effects, which is not true since they have the same biochemicals used in brand name medicines.

Awareness is the key.

There are already many generic medicine shops cropping up across India.  When you are prescribed medicines while in hospital or clinic, you can ask your prescribing physicians or doctors for a generic equivalent of a brand name drugs.  You can use the online database of Indian generic drug list called Jan Aushadi.  Alternatively you can use the many online pharma databases provided by Genericwala.

Generic medicines in India.
Why India is the Pharmacy of the world
India role in Generics
The Indian pharmaceutical industry is the third largest in terms of volume in the world.  How does Indian pharmaceutical industry provide low cost drugs to the poor masses and still turn our profit?  Indian pharmaceutical industries often operate on a much lower profit margin than the western pharmaceutical industries and the labour costs are somewhere around 50% lower in India compared to United States and Europe.

India was able to reach this position due to reverse engineering of many off-patent drugs.  This enabled access of many life-saving drugs to the poor of not only India but across countries in Asia, Africa and Australia.  In fact Indian generic medicine is so important that many International NGOs like Medicins Sans Frontieres or Doctors without borders depend on India for treating patients in under-developed countries.  India's pro-public health policy has been hailed across the world as a model for how future public health policies should look like, although many areas need improvement.

As citizens of India, it is upto us to utilize the benefits of this public health policy.  The awareness still needs to improve among the general public in India on availability of generic drugs versus brand name drugs.

Zika Virus information from www.genericwala. com

Zika Virus facts

Zika virus spreads through the day time by mosquito bites.  Its name comes from the Zika Forest of Uganda, where the virus was first isolated in 1947. Initially occured in 1950s within a narrow equatorial belt from Africa to Asia. Zika virus was again deducted with an outbreak in Brazil in May 2014, the Pan American Health Organization issuing an alert. The countries affected with zika are Mexico, Central America, South America, Pacific Island, Cape Verde of Africa.

In humans, the virus causes mild illness known as Zika fever, Zika, or Zika disease. Zika virus symptoms are fever, joint pains, maculopapular rash, muscle pain, headache & conjunctivitis lasting from several days to a week. Zica virus remains for a few days of an infected person. Deaths are rare.

Zika is transmitted by the Aedes mosquitoes that transmit dengue, chikungunya. Hence the symptoms too are the same. Zika virus is rarely known to migrate from mother to her new born around the time of birth and to placenta. Its not yet surfaced of being transmitting from mother to baby by breast feeding.

Zika virus can be passed from an infected person to another through mosquito bites just like dengue, malaria etc. It can be transmitted by sexual contact also. The mosquitoes bites are mostly day time bites and can be during night time also. So care should be taken when a person gets infected with zica virus.

As per now there is no vaccination nor medications available to cure or prevent zika virus. Just the normal medicines to relieve from fever and pain are taken. Any other medication to be consumed only after consultation with the GP. The other norms advised is to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and avoid anti-inflammatory drugs until the rule-out of dengue tests to avoid the risk of hemorrhage.

Bharat Biotech is likely to develop a vaccination called 'zika vac'for zika virus by this year as they have already begun work n July 2015. During the working on the vaccine, it was found that the early stages of chikangunya, dengue, zika have the same infections being indistinguishable. The other companies to go about the vaccine development feassibility are GlaxosmithKline & Sanofi Pasteur.
